| About the Society |
In BriefThe Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS) is a non-profit, student-run organization at Carleton University, dedicated to encouraging participation in debate, public speaking and analysis of issues in today's society. CUDS is a member of the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID) Central region, and is an officially sanctioned club under the Carleton University Students Association (CUSA). MembershipCUDS is open to anyone! That's right, whether you're in Public Affairs, English, or even if you're a Math major or an Engineer, CUDS welcomes you. All registered Carleton University students are eligible for membership - all you have to do is show up at the meetings! ActivitiesCome out to one of our meetings and try your hand in public speaking, or debate! CUDS holds informal mock debates amongst ourselves, so if you've never debated before, or want to try debate in an informal atmosphere, our meetings are great for you. CUDS members also attend various intercollegiate debate tournaments at the university level in a variety of formats. While predominantly, debates are held in the Canadian Parliamentary style of debate, CUDS debaters also debate in British Parliamentary style. These tournaments culminate in the National Championships, held around March each year. Each university in Canada can send teams, which CUDS does every year. In addition to attending debate tournaments, CUDS is also involved in moderating public debates, holding debate tournaments, and other debate related activities. Look, in the future, for events that CUDS is involved in at Carleton. |
