This past weekend the Carleton University Debating Society (CUDS) competed in the Father Roger Guindon Cup hosted by the English Debating Society of the University of Ottawa. This was the first tournament of the year featuring over 50 teams from schools all over Central Canada. At this tournament Carleton managed to achieved its best ever results. Carleton placed 3 teams in the top ten and two teams in the semi-finals of the tournament. As well, Carleton's contingent also featured the 4th place public speaker and the top novice at the tournament.

The team of Romeo Maione (I Journalism) and Adam Coombs (III History) placed 6th after the round robin to qualify for the semi-finals where they ultimately lost to the winners of the tournament. They finished in 7th place overall. The team of Garnett Genuis (III BPAM) and Remi Kanji (I BPAM) placed 8th after the round robin to also qualify for the semi-finals. They ended up losing in the semi finals and ultimately placing 8th overall. In addition to this success, the team of Daniel Westlake (III Poli-Sci) and Andrew Lawrence (III Poli Sci and Philosophy) placed narrowly missed making the semi-finals and ended up placing 9th overall. Placing 3 teams in the top ten is the most number of teams CUDS has ever placed in the top ten of any tournament.

In the individual speaker category Garnett Genuis was the 7th place speaker overall speaker. Adam Coombs and Andrew Lawrence also placed in the top twenty speakers. As well, Remi Kanji won the award for top novice speaker. In public speaking Blair Stein (II Journalism) placed 1st in the elimination rounds of Public Speaking and ended up placing 4th overall.

Overall this was an extremely successful weekend. CUDS hopes to build off this success this weekend at the Hart House Invitational held at U of T.
